I was so excited to arrive home from the university today to see a little parcel in our mailbox--my seed order! I absolutely can't wait to get planting, but as nature would have it we've had storm after storm recently. It will be awhile, but there is a lot of planning to be done and even just holding the pretty little seed packets sends my heart soaring.

I can't really decide which ones to be the most excited about--it's a tie I think between Amish paste tomatoes, calendula, and buckwheat. |

How cute is the personalized message on the outside of the envelope? |
There's no use being impatient, so I'll settle in for the remainder of February and March to draw veggie garden plot plans, put more effort into the community garden planning, and enjoy the second part of my practicum for school. Spring will be here soon enough, and with it the poetry and beauty of new life unfurling all around us.
I received my seed order last week and was sooo excited too. I did start some of my flowers though. I find if I don't start them really early, then it's late when they bloom. Happy Gardening :)
ReplyDeleteHappy gardening to you too! I can't wait to start the seeds, I want to try the "milk jug greenhouse" idea this year, as well as putting some under lights, to see how it works. So much to the chagrin of my husband, I have been saving milk jugs which are starting to slightly take over our home!
DeleteI'm looking forward to eating some of the produce if I'm still around!
ReplyDeleteYou can eat the produce if you help me grow it! Ha! xoxo
DeleteHow exciting!! Where did you order your seeds from? I'm spending this next month planning as well, although the other day I felt like I absolutely had to plant something, so I got my spinach and chives started in pots in my sunroom.
ReplyDeleteI got my seeds from Pumpkin Moon Farm, an organic family-owned farm in Nova Scotia. I also usually get lots of seeds from Veseys Seeds here on PEI too. :) I have been feeling like having to start them too. So I got my children to plant marigolds in an egg carton--I'm going to use the young plants for a project at school. :)
DeleteWhat pretty packets. And what a good assortment. I planted Amish Paste last year for the first time and liked them so much better than the Romas I always used to plant. Yummy sauce.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you liked the Amish Paste! I was really excited to find someone who was selling them nearby, they weren't as easily available as I had hoped they would be! I am excited about trying a number of new things this year. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of eating kale, but put it in smoothies and soups (don't like the soup addition quite so much) and I'm excited to try kale chips this year. I know it is crazy healthy so I'm hoping to develop a deep and passionate love for it! :)
DeleteIt's always so exciting to receive seed orders in the mail! Makes me want to get out and garden right away. Will you be starting seeds indoors?
ReplyDeleteMegan, I'm going to start some indoors this year. Last year was my first year with a grow light and it was only semi-successful, but I'm hoping experience will help me out a little more this time around. :) Also, this afternoon I'm going to get my little boy to help me winter-sow some of the hardier plants in 4L milk jugs based on the post at: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2012/11/winter-sowing-101-6/. I'm planning to plant swiss chard, broccoli, spinach, kale, onions, beans, peas, and arugula in them and see what happens. Then next month when it is warmer, I'll try putting out a few varieties of squash and tomatoes the same way, and see if I have more luck with the winter sowing than I did (or will) with the grow light in our basement. :)
